Home Retractable Awning Maintenance Tips

Learn how to take care of your retractable awning.

If you want to create an area on your property where you can relax in the shade, then a retractable awning is one of your best options.  A retractable awning is perfect to install over your patio, deck or any entrance going into your home.  The main advantage of a retractable awning is that you can choose when you want to use it.  Many retractable awnings are designed to last over 10 years, but you need take over your structure well.  Luckily, there are a few simple maintenance tips you can follow so that your retractable awning look in pristine condition all year long.

Clean The Fabric and Framing

When it comes to caring for your retractable awning, you first need to start with cleaning the fabric and framing.  Start cleaning your awning by brushing off leaves and debris from the fabric, making your way from the bottom to the top.  You want to use a hose to clean the entire structure including the framing. Make sure you are rinsing off your awning about once a month.  You want to give your awning a deep cleaning every few years, and that consists of scrubbing your awning with a solution of water and mild soap.

Protect It From The Elements and Trees

If you want to care for your retractable awning, then make sure you are trimming your branches especially during the summer and fall.  The last thing you want is for a branch to fall on your awning during a storm, potentially damaging it. Most retractable awnins are designed to protect you only from the sun, so do not keep it out when it is raining or snowing.  You want to avoid using your retractable awning if winds are blowing more than 20 miles per hour.

Lubrication

Depending on your structure, you may need to lubricate the moving parts of your awning once a year.  Make sure you are using a dry silicone spray lubricant and that you are using it on the roller tube. You want to avoid getting any lubricant on the fabric so that you can prevent staining.
